Must-Try Foods In Purple Island (Al Khor) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Purple Island, Al Khor, Qatar

The history of food in the region of Al Khor, which includes Purple Island, is deeply connected to Qatar's cultural and geographic setting. Historically, the Qatari diet was influenced by the Arabian Peninsula's nomadic Bedouins and the bounty of the Persian Gulf. Purple Island itself, also known as Bin Ghannam Island, is famous for its past as a center for dye production from the shells of sea snails that once thrived there, hence the name "Purple Island". However, the island doesn't have its own distinct food history separate from mainland Al Khor, where seafood and traditional Middle Eastern ingredients form the base of the culinary practices.
