Qayraqqum Reservoir, commonly known as Kayrakkum Reservoir, is an artificial lake located in northern Tajikistan, near the town of Qayraqqum. Created in 1956 by damming the Syr Darya River for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation purposes, it has a significant impact on the regional environment and economy. The reservoir is also a vital resource for local agriculture, supporting the irrigation of vast cultivated lands. It boasts a length of about 75 kilometers and a maximum width of around 25 kilometers, covering an area that changes with the seasons but averages around 520 square kilometers. The surrounding area is characterized by semi-arid landscapes with riparian environments along the shoreline. Over time, the reservoir has developed into an important recreational destination, drawing visitors for water sports and fishing. Its biodiversity includes various fish species, and it lies on migratory bird routes, making it an intriguing spot for bird watching. Environmental issues such as water level fluctuations and water quality are concerns, particularly due to agricultural runoff and regional water management practices. Nevertheless, Qayraqqum Reservoir remains one of Tajikistan’s key water bodies, both economically and ecologically.
