Qayraqqum, also known as Kayrakkum, is a town located in the Sughd region of Tajikistan. It's adjacent to the Kayrakkum Reservoir, an artificial lake formed by the Kayrakkum Dam on the Syr Darya river, which is an essential resource for irrigation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The town was established in conjunction with the construction of the dam in the 1950s. The surrounding area is notable for its natural beauty, including semi-arid landscapes, rolling hills, and the expansive waters of the reservoir, which is often referred to as the 'Tajik Sea.' The region's population is ethnically diverse, with a mix of Tajik, Uzbek, Russian, and other ethnic groups. Qayraqqum benefits from the reservoir both economically and culturally, with fishing and leisure activities such as swimming, boating, and beach recreation being popular. The area also serves as a habitat for various bird species, making it attractive for bird watching. Additionally, the nearby city of Khujand, one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, provides historical and cultural sites for visitors.
