The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, situated in Pyongyang, North Korea, is one of the largest stadiums in the world by capacity. Built on Rungra Island, in the middle of the Taedong River, it boasts a colossal seating arrangement that can accommodate approximately 114,000 spectators. The stadium's construction was completed on May 1, 1989, and it covers an area of over 20 hectares. The design features a 16-arch roof resembling a blooming magnolia flower when viewed above and is easily distinguishable due to its unique architecture. Rungrado 1st of May Stadium is primarily used for soccer and athletics but serves a larger purpose beyond sports; it is a prominent venue for political events, celebrations, and notably the Arirang Festival — a gymnastics and artistic festival. Despite the limited access to North Korea, the stadium is a monumental example of the country's infrastructural ambitions and remains a subject of intrigue to the outside world.
