The Ruwanwelisaya is a prominent stupa in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, revered by Buddhists worldwide. Constructed by King Dutugemunu, it stands as an emblem of Buddhist heritage and culture. The stupa is part of the 'Atamasthana'—the eight sacred places in the city. The Ruwanwelisaya's graceful shape symbolizes the zenith of ancient Sinhalese architectural prowess. Its dome represents the Buddhist cosmos, and the harmonious proportions mirror the principles of the Dhamma. The stupa is surrounded by a large courtyard with an intricately carved vahalkada (frontispiece) at the cardinal points, depicting various figures including elephants, horses, and deities. The pinnacle is crowned with a jewel-studded crest relic chamber. As a living monument, the Ruwanwelisaya continues to be a focal point for pilgrimage, meditation, and religious festivities, particularly during the full moon Poya days, attracting thousands of devotees who perform rituals and offer flowers. Its significance extends beyond religious bounds, showcasing Sri Lanka's historical narrative and rich cultural tapestry. Sprawling over 55 acres, the stupa complex includes also includes the sacred Bodhi tree, numerous shrines, and other monastic buildings.
