The cuisine of Samdrup Jongkhar Dzong, like the rest of Bhutan, is steeped in the country's rich cultural heritage. Bhutanese food is known for its spiciness and heavy use of chillies. The agricultural lifestyle of the region has provided a diet based on cereals like rice and maize, along with various tubers, legumes, and, in particular Bhutanese, recipes often feature an assortment of fresh vegetables. Notably, due to religious and cultural reasons, Bhutan has been known for its minimal use of meat. Nevertheless, over time, with the advent of modernization and tourism, other non-traditional meats have been introduced, although beef is still refrained from in many areas due to religious beliefs.
