Shakhrisabz is known as the birthplace of Timur (Tamerlane), a great conqueror and the founder of the Timurid Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city has a rich history and is famous for its impressive historical monuments, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
