Siju Cave, located near the banks of the Simsang River close to the village of Siju in the Indian state of Meghalaya, is one of the most remarkable natural wonders of the region. Known as the third-longest cave in the Indian subcontinent, Siju Cave is also referred to as the 'Cave of the Bats' due to the presence of a large number of bat species dwelling within it. The limestone cave features impressive stalactites and stalagmites and houses rare species of cave-dwelling fish. Its beautiful rock formations and water passages have made it a fascinating destination for cavers and tourists alike. Historically, the cave was known to the local people, but it gained significant interest when it was first explored by a British geologist named W. T. Blanford in 1894. Over the years, more sections of the cave have been explored, revealing its complex and extensive network. Siju Cave is not just a natural attraction but also an ecological haven, supporting a unique biological ecosystem which is critical for biodiversity and scientific research.
