Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
The Terrace Houses are situated within the ancient city of Ephesus, one of Turkey's most significant archaeological sites, located in the modern-day town of Selçuk. These residential dwellings, dating from the 1st century BC, provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Ephesus's wealthy citizens during the Roman period. They are named for their terraced construction on the slopes of Bulbul Mountain. The residences are remarkable for their luxurious features; they were fitted with mosaic floors, frescoed walls, heating systems, and even private baths. Excavations of the Terrace Houses have revealed six residential units arranged around a central courtyard, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship and artistry. This site truly epitomizes the blend of Greek and Roman architectural influences. Museums have preserved the artifacts found here, and extensive restoration work allows visitors to walk through the houses and experience the opulence of ancient Ephesian high society.
