Best Time To Visit The River Cam (Punting) (Cambridge) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit The River Cam for Punting in Cambridge, United Kingdom

The quintessential Cambridge activity of punting on the River Cam is best enjoyed from late spring to early autumn, typically between April and September. During these months, the weather in Cambridge is more likely to be warm and pleasant, which is ideal for spending time on the water. The flourishing scenery along the college backs, with gardens in bloom and wildlife active, adds to the overall charm and appeal of the punting experience. Tourists should aim for weekdays or early mornings on weekends if they wish to avoid the larger crowds that are commonplace during the peak visiting hours of sunny afternoons and bank holidays.

Despite the popularity of the warmer months, punting can be uniquely enchanting during the off-peak season as well. Autumn brings a display of vibrant foliage along the riverbanks, and while the chillier temperatures of October and November necessitate warm clothing, the quieter atmosphere can make for a serene and reflective journey along the river. Winter punting, although less common due to the cold, offers a tranquil and frosty beauty with far fewer fellow punters. However, it's essential for visitors to check ahead for boat availability as some punting companies operate on a reduced schedule or close during the winter months.
