Must-Try Foods In Tofukuji Temple (Kyoto) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Tofukuji Temple, Kyoto, Japan

Tofukuji Temple, a significant Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, is known less for its specific food history and more for its cultural and spiritual significance within Japan. Established in 1236 and named after two temples in Nara, Todaiji and Kofukuji, it's a place where visitors admire the architecture, gardens, and the autumn colors. However, the culinary practices surrounding the temple like many other temples in Kyoto are heavily influenced by Buddhist cuisine, known as shojin ryori. This is a vegetarian cooking style that originated from the dietary rules of Buddhist monks. Typically, shojin ryori does not use meat, fish, or strong-smelling vegetables such as garlic and onion but focuses on seasonal vegetables, tofu, and grains, creating a diet that's inherently vegetarian and sometimes vegan.
