Must-Try Foods In Toorsa Reserve (Gelephu) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Toorsa Reserve, Gelephu, Bhutan

The food history in Toorsa Reserve, like much of Bhutan, is steeped in the agricultural practices and cultural traditions of the region. Bhutanese cuisine is largely influenced by its geographical location, with a heavy reliance on locally grown rice, maize, and buckwheat. In the southern regions, including Gelephu, the climate allows for the cultivation of a variety of vegetables and fruits. This has led to a cuisine that incorporates an abundance of fresh produce in its dishes.

Moreover, Bhutan's food is characterized by the prominent use of spices, especially chili, which is considered more of a vegetable than a spice. Bhutanese people love their food spicy and flavorsome. Dishes often revolve around a combination of heat from chilies and the distinctive taste of Sichuan pepper known as "ema" (chili) and "datsi" (cheese) in the local language. Because of religious beliefs, certain meats are not commonly consumed, thus many Bhutanese dishes have developed to highlight vegetarian ingredients.
