If you are planning a quiet mountain trip in Uttarakhand and want more than the usual tourist circuit, Narayan Ashram and the higher Kumaon belt deserve your attention. This guide is for travellers who want practical route advice, a sense of what the journey feels like, and clear ideas on when to go, where to stay, and how to plan without overcomplicating it.
Narayan Ashram sits high above the Kali valley in Pithoragarh district, and the drive into this part of Kumaon is as memorable as the destination itself. Add in nearby hill towns, temple stops, forest roads, and long views of the Himalayan ridges, and you get a trip that feels remote, calm, and very different from the crowded hill stations many people know.
Why Narayan Ashram and Kumaon Heights are worth your time
Narayan Ashram is not a typical sightseeing stop with cafes and souvenir lanes. It is a peaceful spiritual retreat established in the 1930s, set at roughly 2,740 metres above sea level, and it attracts people who want silence, cooler weather, and a slower pace. For many travellers, the real appeal is the journey through eastern Uttarakhand: terraced hills, pine-covered slopes, river valleys, and small settlements where life still follows the mountain calendar.
The wider Kumaon heights around Pithoragarh, Berinag, Didihat, Askot, Dharchula, and Munsiyari offer a mix of panoramic views and authentic local life. If you are coming from Delhi, Lucknow, or even the plains of western Uttar Pradesh, this is the kind of trip that rewards patient planning. You should come for the mountain atmosphere, but stay for the long drive, the homely meals, and the feeling that the landscape changes every hour.
Understanding the route and the landscape
The most common access point is via Pithoragarh district. From Almora, the road to Pithoragarh can take around 8-10 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. From Pithoragarh town, reaching Narayan Ashram usually takes another 4-6 hours by road, and the final stretch can feel slow because the roads are narrow and winding. Travel times in this region vary a lot with weather, landslides, and roadwork, so always keep a buffer.
What makes this area special is the shift in altitude. You may start the day in a temperate town and end it in a place where the air is noticeably thinner and cooler. On clear days, the distant snow peaks appear and disappear between ridges. On cloudy days, the valleys become moody and green. Either way, the scenery feels dramatic without being manufactured for tourism.
Typical route options
- Via Kathgodam-Haldwani-Almora-Pithoragarh: a classic Kumaon road trip route, suitable if you want to break the journey over 1-2 nights.
- Via Tanakpur-Champawat-Pithoragarh: useful for travellers arriving from the plains near Pilibhit, Bareilly, or eastern Uttar Pradesh.
- To Narayan Ashram from Pithoragarh: best done with a local taxi or an experienced driver familiar with mountain roads.
What to expect at Narayan Ashram
Narayan Ashram was founded by Narain Swami and has long been associated with service, quiet study, and spiritual retreat. Visitors generally come here for the atmosphere rather than for a packed list of activities. You will find simple accommodation, a serene setting, and a place that encourages reflection. It is especially appealing if you are tired of over-programmed hill holidays and want something more grounded.
The ashram area is clean, sparse, and peaceful. You are likely to see students, devotees, and travellers who have come for a few days of rest. The climate can be cold even in spring and autumn, so pack layers. Mornings and evenings are usually much colder than the daytime, and winters can be sharp enough to make proper woollens necessary.
Do not expect luxury here. That is part of the charm. Rooms are generally simple, food is basic vegetarian fare, and the rhythm of the place is quiet. If you are planning to stay inside the ashram or in nearby guesthouses, confirm availability in advance, especially during peak summer holidays and around local pilgrimage periods.
Best time to visit and what each season feels like
The best time for most travellers is from April to June and again from September to November. These months usually give you clearer roads, pleasant days, and better mountain visibility. Summer in Kumaon is comfortable compared with the plains, while autumn often gives crisp air and wide-open views.
July to August bring monsoon conditions, and this is when landslides, slippery roads, and cloud cover can affect movement. If you travel during this period, keep your plan flexible and watch local weather updates closely. December to February can be very cold at higher elevations, and some stretches may become difficult if there is snowfall or ice.
| Season | What it feels like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| April-June | Mild days, cool nights, clearer skies | Comfortable road travel, sightseeing, first-time visitors |
| July-August | Rainy, humid lower down, landslide risk | Travellers who can handle delays and keep plans flexible |
| September-November | Crisp air, good visibility, festive season feel | Photography, long drives, quiet stays |
| December-February | Very cold at higher altitudes | Experienced hill travellers, winter lovers |
Nearby places to combine with Narayan Ashram
If you are coming this far into Kumaon, it makes sense to build a broader route rather than do a single-stop trip. Pithoragarh town works well as a base for a day or two. It is a functional hill town with markets, food options, and road connections. From there, you can add places like Berinag for tea gardens and view points, or Dharchula if you are interested in border-region landscapes and river valley scenery.
Askot is another useful name to keep on your list, especially if you enjoy forested areas and wildlife landscapes. Munsiyari, although farther away, is one of the most rewarding Kumaon destinations if you have extra time; the drive from Pithoragarh can take several hours, but the views and treks are worth it for many travellers. If your schedule is tight, choose one cluster and do it well instead of trying to cover too much road in one trip.
A sensible 4-5 day plan
- Day 1: Arrive at Kathgodam or Tanakpur, stay overnight in Almora, Champawat, or Pithoragarh depending on your route.
- Day 2: Reach Pithoragarh and rest, or continue toward your base near Narayan Ashram.
- Day 3: Visit Narayan Ashram and spend unhurried time there.
- Day 4: Explore nearby view points or return via Berinag/Didihat.
- Day 5: Drive back with a buffer for road delays.
Stay options, food, and realistic budget
Accommodation in this region ranges from basic guesthouses to simple hotels in town. Near Narayan Ashram, choices are limited, so many travellers prefer to stay in Pithoragarh or another nearby town and do the ashram visit as a day trip. In peak season, rooms in decent hill-town hotels may cost around ?1,500-?3,500 per night, while simpler lodges can be lower. Basic or ashram-linked stays, if available, may cost less, but confirm current arrangements directly before you go.
Food is usually straightforward North Indian or vegetarian mountain fare. Expect simple meals rather than elaborate restaurant dining. A basic meal may cost around ?150-?300 per person in town, and more in remote stretches where supply is limited. Carry enough water, dry snacks, and a few medicines for motion sickness, acidity, or headaches if you are sensitive to mountain roads.
For transport, a private taxi from Pithoragarh for a day excursion can cost roughly ?3,500-?6,500 depending on vehicle type, distance, and waiting time. Shared transport may be cheaper where available, but schedules are not always reliable in remote areas. If you are coming from outside the region, budget separately for rail or air access to the plains and for the mountain leg from Kathgodam, Tanakpur, or Pantnagar.
Practical tips for a smoother trip
Mountain travel in Uttarakhand is rewarding, but it asks for patience. Start drives early in the morning so you are not negotiating narrow roads after dark. Keep some cash with you because digital payments may fail in weaker network zones. Charge your phone and power bank at every opportunity, and download offline maps before leaving a major town.
Dress in layers. Even when the lower hills feel warm, Narayan Ashram and the higher Kumaon roads can be cool enough for sweaters, jackets, and closed shoes. If you are travelling with older family members or children, build in extra stops. This is not the kind of route where you should try to “cover everything” in a rush.
- Carry original ID proofs for hotel check-ins.
- Keep snacks, water, and basic medicines handy.
- Check road conditions before setting out each day.
- Ask your driver about fuel stops and mobile network patches.
- Respect local customs, especially around quiet religious spaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Narayan Ashram suitable for a family trip?
Yes, if your family is comfortable with basic facilities and longer road travel. It is better suited to families who enjoy quiet places and can handle simple accommodation. If anyone in the group has difficulty with steep roads or cold weather, plan carefully and keep the itinerary light.
How many days do you need for Narayan Ashram and Kumaon Heights?
For just Narayan Ashram and nearby Pithoragarh, 3-4 days can work. If you want to add Berinag, Didihat, or Munsiyari, plan for 5-7 days. The roads are beautiful but time-consuming, so a relaxed pace always works better than a hurried checklist.
Can you visit Narayan Ashram in winter?
Yes, but winter travel can be challenging because of cold temperatures and possible road issues. If you go between December and February, check conditions locally and be prepared for delays. Warm clothing and flexible plans are essential.
Are there good food options near Narayan Ashram?
Food options are limited near the ashram itself, so most travellers eat simple meals arranged by the accommodation or in nearby towns. Pithoragarh has more variety, though still not a big-city range. It is wise to keep snacks and drinking water with you.
What is the best base for exploring this region?
Pithoragarh is the most practical base for most travellers because it has better road connections and more stay options. From there, you can do day trips or short stays toward Narayan Ashram, Berinag, and other nearby hill areas. If you want a quieter, more remote experience, stay closer to your chosen destination, but book early.
Do I need to book transport in advance?
It is strongly recommended, especially in peak season or if you are travelling in a group. Local taxis and mountain drivers familiar with this terrain are usually a better choice than trying to arrange transport at the last minute. Confirm rates, route plans, and waiting charges before departure.
Conclusion
Narayan Ashram and the Kumaon heights offer something rare: a mountain journey that feels calm, rooted, and genuinely different from the usual holiday circuit. If you give yourself enough time, travel with realistic expectations, and keep your plans flexible, this part of Uttarakhand can leave you refreshed in a way that busy destinations often do not.
