How To Reach Akrema Village

Travel to Akrema Village, Atauro Island, Timor-Leste

Accessing Atauro Island

Atauro Island is accessible by ferry or water taxi from the capital city of Timor-Leste, Dili. The most common departure point is the Dili Port.

By Ferry

  • Naroman Ferry: The Naroman ferry is a public ferry service that usually operates on Saturdays.
  • Beloi Beach Hotel Ferry: Operates a service that may require advance booking and offers a more comfortable option for guests of the hotel, but it is also open for general travelers.

By Water Taxi

Private water taxis are also an option. They provide more flexible scheduling and can be a quicker, albeit more expensive, way to reach Atauro Island. Booking in advance is highly advised.

Reaching Akrema Village

Once on Atauro Island, Akrema Village is located on the northern coast. It is one of the more remote locations on the island and can be reached through a combination of transportation methods.

By Local Transportation

Local transportation options may include 4WD vehicles and motorcycle 'taxis' (mototaxis). The availability and reliability of these services can vary, and it's often best to arrange transport through your accommodation or a tour operator in Dili or Atauro Island.

By Foot

Depending on where you are on the island, Akrema can also be reached by hiking. This option may not be suitable for all travelers due to the level of difficulty and the lack of clear paths in some areas.

By Boat

Considering Akrema's coastal location, it is also possible to arrange a boat transfer directly to the village. This can sometimes be the most direct and scenic approach, but sea conditions should always be assessed for safety.

Important Tips

  • Timing: Make sure to enquire about the ferry or water taxi schedules as they can change due to weather conditions or local events.
  • Accommodation: Booking accommodation in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons or local holidays.
  • Currency: The currency in Timor-Leste is the US Dollar. Ensure you have enough cash before leaving Dili, as ATMs and card services are very limited on the island.
  • Local Help: Consider hiring a local guide or asking for assistance from locals for directions and advice on the best routes.
