Atauro Island is accessible by ferry or water taxi from the capital city of Timor-Leste, Dili. The most common departure point is the Dili Port.
Private water taxis are also an option. They provide more flexible scheduling and can be a quicker, albeit more expensive, way to reach Atauro Island. Booking in advance is highly advised.
Once on Atauro Island, Akrema Village is located on the northern coast. It is one of the more remote locations on the island and can be reached through a combination of transportation methods.
Local transportation options may include 4WD vehicles and motorcycle 'taxis' (mototaxis). The availability and reliability of these services can vary, and it's often best to arrange transport through your accommodation or a tour operator in Dili or Atauro Island.
Depending on where you are on the island, Akrema can also be reached by hiking. This option may not be suitable for all travelers due to the level of difficulty and the lack of clear paths in some areas.
Considering Akrema's coastal location, it is also possible to arrange a boat transfer directly to the village. This can sometimes be the most direct and scenic approach, but sea conditions should always be assessed for safety.
