Welcome to Al Mahatta Museum, Sharjah

Sharjah’s history of aviation and tourism finds its roots in the establishment of the Al Mahatta Museum. Once a bustling airport, this site is a testament to the emirate’s role as a nexus for early commercial air travel in the region. Delve into the rich heritage and see how the rise of aviation shaped tourism in Sharjah and the wider United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Historical Significance of Al Mahatta Museum

The Al Mahatta Museum, located in the heart of Sharjah, was inaugurated in 1932 as the first airport in the Trucial States, which are now known as the United Arab Emirates. The airport served as a refueling stop for international flights between Europe and India during the age of British Imperial Airways.

The transformation from a strategic refueling point to a museum has preserved a significant piece of the region’s history marking the evolution of air transport in the Gulf and laying the groundwork for Sharjah’s cultural prominence.

Al Mahatta Museum Today

Today, Al Mahatta Museum stands as a monument to Sharjah’s aviation history but it also resonates with tourists interested in the region's technological and cultural progression. The museum showcases an array of historic aircraft, including a de Havilland DH.89A Dragon Rapide and a Douglas DC-3, which are situated on the original tarmac.

Interactive displays and photographs provide detailed insights into the life and functioning of the airport during its operational years. Moreover, four hangars exhibit a range of aviation-related artifacts that narrate the story of aviation through the 20th century in Sharjah.

Impact on Tourism

The establishment of Al Mahatta as a museum has played a vital role in the diversification of Sharjah's tourism profile. History buffs, aviation enthusiasts, and cultural tourists are drawn not only to Al Mahatta but to Sharjah’s other museums and cultural sites, further bolstering the emirate’s reputation as a hub for cultural tourism.

Latest Tourism Trends
