Al Balad is the historical area of Jeddah, the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, located along the Red Sea. The district is known for its traditional Arab architecture and was once the center of Jeddah. Al Balad was established in the 7th century and contains many ancient buildings that are constructed from coral stone and reinforced with wood. The area has a distinct character featuring narrow winding lanes, large merchant houses with intricately carved wooden balconies, and vibrant marketplaces called souqs. In recent years, Al Balad has been undergoing restoration to preserve its cultural heritage and historic structures, including the well-known Nassif House and many traditional Hijazi architectural styles. This place represents a rich cultural tapestry, showcasing a blend of historic pilgrimage routes and spice trade influences. In 2014, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Jeddah. The old town is also home to some of the oldest mosques in Jeddah, including the Shafei Mosque.
