Alexandrowka Russian Colony (Potsdam) History

Welcome to Alexandrowka Russian Colony, Potsdam, Germany

Alexandrowka, the enchanting Russian colony in Potsdam, is a historical and cultural gem that dates back to the early 19th century. This unique enclave was established by King Frederick William III of Prussia to honor the memory of his close relationship with Tsar Alexander I of Russia. In 1826, the King commissioned the construction of a settlement for the Russian singers of the First Prussian Regiment of the Guards.

Historical Significance and Heritage

The colony initially consisted of thirteen wooden houses, designed to resemble a traditional Russian village. It was built under the direction of Peter Joseph Lenné, a renowned Prussian landscape gardener, and the architect, Wilhelm Stier. Each house was to be inhabited by Russian immigrant families and their descendants, indefinitely maintaining the Russian character of the settlement. Alexandrowka is now a part of the larger UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The colony showcases a perfect blend of Russian and Prussian architectural styles, offering a glimpse into the cultural exchange that existed between the two nations.
