Welcome to the Alola Foundation Center, Dili

Set in the heart of Dili, Timor-Leste's vibrant capital, the Alola Foundation Center is a beacon of hope and empowerment in a nation still blossoming from its dark days of struggle. The center was established by the Alola Foundation, an organization created by Kirsty Sword Gusmão, the former First Lady of Timor-Leste, in response to the urgent needs of women and children in the aftermath of the nation's independence struggle.

The Birth of Timor-Leste's Tourism Industry

Timor-Leste's tourism sector is relatively young, with the nation only gaining its independence from Indonesia in 2002. In the aftermath, the country's infrastructure and economy struggled, but the nation's rich cultural heritage, pristine natural landscapes, and the resilience of its people have gradually become a draw for international tourists.

In the early days, the Alola Foundation played a critical role in rebuilding the social fabric of the nation and has since become a point of interest for those especially invested in ethical and responsible tourism.

Alola Foundation Center's Role in Tourism

The Alola Foundation Center does not serve as a typical tourist attraction; rather, it is a living institution continually working towards the betterment of Timor-Leste's women and children. Visitors to the center can learn about the Foundation's various programs, including education, economic empowerment, health, and advocacy for women's rights.

Moreover, tourists can purchase traditional Timorese handicrafts produced in the Foundation's various women's empowerment programs. These purchases help support the local economy and the Foundation's essential work.

Latest Trends in Timor-Leste Tourism

Eco-tourism and cultural tourism are emerging as significant trends in Timor-Leste as visitors seek authentic experiences and wish to contribute positively to the places they visit. Community-based tourism is another growing domain, with more tourists looking to stay in community-owned accommodations, engage in local experiences, and learn from the Timorese people.
