Alster Lakes are two artificial lakes within the city limits of Hamburg, Germany, formed by damming the small river Alster to create the Außenalster ('Outer Alster') and the smaller Binnenalster ('Inner Alster'). Known for their scenic beauty, these lakes are a central recreational area for Hamburg's residents and visitors. The Binnenalster, especially, is surrounded by promenades, luxury hotels, shops, and cafes, and its banks are typically bustling with walkers, joggers, and sailors. This central location provides a stunning backdrop to the historic cityscape, with the spires of the city's churches and the iconic Rathaus or town hall visible in the skyline. The Außenalster, the larger of the two, offers a more tranquil experience with its expansive waters, green parks, and distant views of elegant villas lining the shore. It is a favorite among sailing enthusiasts and rowers, providing ample space for water sports. The lakes are linked by the Lombardsbrücke and the Kennedybrücke bridges, which are also excellent vantage points for taking in the views. Seasonal events, such as the Alstervergnügen festival, bring light shows, street performers, and fireworks to the lakes' environs.
