Type of destination: Entertainment District
Ideal visit duration: 2-4 hours
The Reeperbahn is a street and entertainment district in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, one of the city's major nightlife hubs. Known colloquially as 'die sündigste Meile' (the most sinful mile) due to its reputation for nightlife and adult entertainment, it stretches for about 930 meters. The street's name comes from the old German word 'Reep' meaning 'heavy rope,' which reflects its history as a place where ropes were made for Hamburg's ships. Over the years, the Reeperbahn evolved into a center for nightclubs, bars, theaters, and strip clubs. A notable landmark is the Davidwache, a famous police station located at its southern end. The district has also inspired musical works and is referenced in countless songs. Furthermore, the Reeperbahn Festival, a major music event, takes place here annually. Its vibrant and diverse atmosphere has made it a popular destination for tourists looking for a taste of Hamburg's nightlife and for locals seeking entertainment.
