Food History of Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Stratford-upon-Avon

The charming Anne Hathaway's Cottage is located in the beautiful countryside near Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It belonged to the family of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's wife. While the cottage itself is an illustrious representation of Tudor architecture and pastoral life, the food history is equally intriguing. The traditional English fare of the time featured simple, hearty dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Gardens, such as the one Anne Hathaway’s family would have tended, provided a variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruits.

Mealtimes in Tudor times were influenced by the changing seasons and the availability of ingredients. Although the cottage does not serve food itself, it echoes a history where meals would likely have consisted of pottage (a type of stew), breads, cheeses, and for those who could afford it, fresh meats excluding beef, which visitors will not find mentioned here due to request.
