Arjuna's Penance, also known as the Descent of the Ganges, is a magnificent open-air rock relief located in the coastal town of Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), in Tamil Nadu, India. This grand monument is considered one of the greatest examples of Pallava art and dates back to the 7th century during the reign of King Mahendravarman I and his son Narasimhavarman I. The relief is approximately 96 feet long and 43 feet high, carved on the face of two enormous adjacent rocks. It depicts a diverse range of figures and scenes, including gods, demi-gods, animals, birds, and natural elements like trees, suggesting the descent of the holy river Ganges from the heavens to earth, led by Bhagiratha's penance. The purpose of the sculpture is to illustrate the story of Arjuna's Penance from the Mahabharata, as well as the sanctity and significance of the river Ganges in Hindu mythology.
