Arjuna's Penance, also known as the Descent of the Ganges, is a magnificent open-air rock relief located in Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram), Tamil Nadu, India. The best time to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site is during the cooler months of October to March when the weather is more conducive for sightseeing. During this period, the temperature is mild with minimal rainfall, making your exploration of the intricate carvings and historical context comfortable. Furthermore, the skies are clearer which provides excellent lighting for photography.
The monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September, can make the site less accessible due to heavy rains, although the rain-washed sculptures have a unique charm if you don't mind getting a bit wet. On the other hand, summer months from April to June are usually very hot and humid, which might not be the most pleasant for tourist activities, especially during midday when the sun is at its peak. So, to fully appreciate the architectural brilliance and to spend ample time without the discomfort of extreme weather, sticking to the cooler winter months is highly recommended.
