Aspendos Theatre is one of the most magnificent and well-preserved Roman theatres in the world, located in the ancient city of Aspendos, approximately 47 kilometers east of the modern city of Antalya, Turkey. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, this remarkable structure was constructed by the architect Zeno, a native of Aspendos. With a seating capacity of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 people, it is notable for its excellent acoustics, allowing even whispers on stage to be heard in the uppermost tiers. The theatre's skene (stage building) and its ornate decorations exhibit the grandeur of Roman architectural design. The semicircular orchestra and the cavea (audience seating area) are designed according to the classical Greek theatre layout. It was initially used for plays, but later alterations allowed the accommodation of gladiatorial contests. Aspendos Theatre continues to host events and performances, including the annual Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival, melding ancient splendor with contemporary art forms.
