Type of destination: Historical and natural site
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Olympos and Chimera (also known as Yanartaş - meaning 'burning stone') are two unique historical and natural wonders situated near the town of Çıralı in the Antalya region of Turkey. Olympos, an ancient city set in a valley, was once a significant Lycian city and is now steeped in mythology and history. Visitors walk through a verdant forest to explore the remnants of temples, tombs, a theatre, and a Roman bath. With a short hike through pine forests and along the Mediterranean coast, travelers reach the stunning beach bordered by the ruins, which adds a touch of magic to the sun-soaked sands. Meanwhile, the Chimera, about an hour's walk from Olympos, is a set of perpetually burning flames that emerge from crevices on the rocky slopes of Mount Chimaera. These natural flames, which have been burning for thousands of years due to the release of natural gases, hold significant mythological importance, creating an enchanting spectacle at night. Both sites are part of a national park and offer visitors a combination of history, myth, and natural beauty, making them popular with history buffs, nature enthusiasts, and photographers.
