Bago, also known as Pegu, is an ancient city and the capital of the Bago Region in Myanmar (Burma). Located about 91 km (57 miles) northeast of Yangon, Bago is steeped in history, having been the capital of the Mon Kingdom in the 14th and 16th centuries. There are several not-to-be-missed historical and religious sites, including the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, which is over a thousand years old and is one of the most venerated in Myanmar. The pagoda's spire is even taller than that of Yangon's famous Shwedagon Pagoda. The city is also home to the gigantic reclining Buddha, Shwethalyaung, which is an impressive example of traditional Burmese artistry. Other significant attractions include the Kyaik Pun Pagoda with its four towering Buddha statues facing the cardinal points and the Hinthar Hill with its panoramic views of the city. Additionally, Bago is an excellent place to experience local life and markets and to sample Burmese cuisine. The city serves as a gateway to exploring the surrounding areas, including smaller villages and natural attractions.
