Banawali is an archaeological site belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization located in the Fatehabad District of Haryana, India. It is situated on the banks of the now extinct Sarasvati River. The site, which is approximately 120 hectares in area, reveals a pre-Harappan settlement dating back to around 2700 BCE and a Harappan settlement from about 2500 to 1750 BCE. Excavations at Banawali have unearthed a fortified township, indicating a well-established planning system. The fortified area shows evidence of successive settlements and the existence of a citadel complex similar to that found in other Harappan cities like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. Noteworthy findings include terracotta figurines, seals, toys, jewelry, and numerous artifacts relating to the day-to-day life of its inhabitants. The discovery of barley grains indicates that agriculture played a central role in the economy. The site also provides insights into the Harappan script with a few inscribed seals found here.
