Big Buddha Hill, also known as Wat Phra Yai, is a prominent landmark in Pattaya, Thailand. It stands atop Pratumnak Hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding city and coast. The hill is dominated by a large statue of the Buddha in the Mara Vichai posture, known colloquially as the 'Big Buddha'. At 18 meters in height, it is the largest in the region. It was constructed in the 1970s when Pattaya was transforming from a small fishing village into a bustling tourist destination. The statue is visible from miles away and is a famed tourist attraction. The hill is also home to a complex of temples, with pavilions, bells, and numerous other smaller statues of Buddha that vary in style and symbolism. Visitors can ascend the wide staircase flanked by golden dragons to reach the plateau where the Big Buddha sits. The staircase itself is lined with vendors selling religious artifacts, souvenirs, and refreshments. The serene and spiritual atmosphere on the hill, combined with the striking architecture and religious art, makes it a popular spot for both tourists and devout Buddhists. One can experience cultural traditions, participate in rituals, or simply enjoy the quietude and the view.
