History of Blenduk Church

The Blenduk Church, also known as Gereja Blenduk, is an iconic landmark in Semarang, the capital of Central Java, Indonesia. Built in 1753, it is the oldest Christian church in Central Java, with an extensive history that adds to the city's rich cultural tapestry. Initially a modest structure, the church underwent several renovations, with the most significant one taking place in 1894. It was then that the church received its distinctive dome and neo-classical style architecture, reminiscent of the great European churches.

Throughout its existence, Blenduk Church has served as a beacon for the Dutch community in Semarang during colonial times and continues to be a place of worship and a significant historical site. Its name "Blenduk" comes from the Javanese word for "dome," because of its remarkable copper dome that dominates the city's skyline.
