This Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated to Saint Andrew, has been an important spiritual and tourist destination for centuries. It stands as a striking example of Gothic architecture in the heart of the city.

Historical Significance

The history of Bordeaux Cathedral is deeply intertwined with the history of France itself. The original cathedral on this site was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1096. However, the majority of the current structure dates back from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.

Throughout history, the cathedral played a significant role in the religious and political landscape. It was the location of the blessed marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future King Louis VII of France in the 12th century, which had historical ramifications throughout Europe as Eleanor later became the Queen of England and a key figure in the Middle Ages.
