Ever since its creation, it has captured the imaginations of visitors from around the world. The Cappella Sansevero serves as a symbol of the rich Neapolitan heritage and holds a special place in the history of tourism for the city.

Origins and Historical Significance

The chapel's history dates back to the late 16th century when it was originally built as a private chapel for the Sansevero family. However, the baroque masterpiece, as we know it today, owes much to the genius of Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, who, in the 18th century, transformed it into a repository of artistic wonders. The chapel houses some of the most extraordinary works of Italian art, including the renowned sculpture 'Cristo Velato' (Veiled Christ) by Giuseppe Sanmartino, which continues to draw art enthusiasts and tourists to this date.

Tourism History

The allure of the Cappella Sansevero began in earnest in the 19th century when it started to attract visitors from outside of Italy. The chapel's blend of art, science, and mysticism, along with the enigmatic works by Raimondo di Sangro, quickly made it a must-visit destination for cultured travelers on their Grand Tour of Europe.

Throughout the 20th century, the fascination with the chapel only grew. It survived the tumultuous periods of World War I and II, with efforts made to preserve its invaluable art for future generations. Tourism flourished in the post-war era as travel became more accessible, and Cappella Sansevero became firmly embedded in the tapestry of Naples' cultural attractions.
