Situated atop a hill in Bhaktapur District, Changu Narayan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is considered the oldest temple in Nepal’s history and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by forest with champak trees and a small village known as Changu Village, the site offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valley and terraced fields. The temple exhibits a rich display of Nepalese architecture with woodcarvings and metalwork that are believed to be centuries old. The history of Changu Narayan dates back to the Licchavi period, evidenced by inscriptions found in the temple vicinity, making it an important cultural and historical site. Preserving the traditional Newari architecture, it stands as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Nepal. The temple complex is adorned with various statues and carvings of Hindu deities, with many festivals held here throughout the year drawing both pilgrims and tourists.
