How To Reach Chongqing

Traveling to Chongqing, China

Chongqing is a major city in southwest China and a significant inland port. It's accessible by air, road, rail, and river. Here's how you can reach Chongqing:

By Air

Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) is the primary gateway for international and domestic flights. It is well-connected with major cities around the world as well as numerous domestic destinations within China.

  • International flights connect Chongqing with cities like Tokyo, Bangkok, Los Angeles, London, and more.
  • Domestic flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an and other major cities are frequent.
  • Upon arriving at the airport, you can take a taxi or the metro (Line 3) to reach the city center or other destinations within Chongqing.

By Train

Chongqing has several railway stations, with Chongqing North Railway Station being one of the busiest. It serves:

  • High-speed trains connecting Chongqing to Chengdu, Guangzhou, Xi'an, and more.
  • Regular train services to and from cities across the country.
  • For easier access to the metropolitan area, many of the city's train stations are integrated with Chongqing's metro system.

By Bus

Intercity coaches run from neighbouring provinces and cities to various coach stations in Chongqing, such as Chongqing Bus Station and Chongqing West Station. While slower than train travel, this option might be suitable for shorter distances or when train tickets are hard to come by.

By Boat

As a port city on the Yangtze River, Chongqing is a popular starting point for Yangtze River cruises. Cruises typically head downstream towards Yichang and feature excursions to the Three Gorges Dam and other scenic spots along the river.

Driving

If you choose to drive, Chongqing is well-connected to the Chinese national highway system. Major highways include the G50 Huyu Expressway and the G65 Baomao Expressway among others. However, keep in mind that local traffic within Chongqing can be heavy, and navigation can be challenging due to its mountainous terrain.

Once in Chongqing, the city's extensive public transportation system, including metro, buses and taxis, makes it relatively easy to get around.
