Coral Island (Al Marjan Island), Dammam – A Brief History of Tourism

Located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the beautiful Coral Island, also known as Al Marjan Island, is situated in the city of Dammam. Dammam itself is part of the Eastern Province and is known for its rich history and contribution to the kingdom's economy. While Dammam has been a significant center for the oil industry, its tourism aspect has been blossoming in recent years.

The Foundations of Tourism

Historically, the region's tourism industry was not as prominent due to the Kingdom's conservative policies and focus on oil production. However, Saudi Vision 2030, an ambitious reform plan, aimed to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil. This includes a strong push to develop the tourism sector, opening up the country to international tourists and showcasing its diverse range of cultural, historical, and leisure attractions.

The Rise of Al Marjan Island

Al Marjan Island began gaining attention as a tourism destination relatively recently. As part of the Eastern Province's coastal offerings, it plays an important role in the region's tourism portfolio. The island is named for its coral-rich waters, which are ideal for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling.

Developments in Al Marjan Island's Tourism

In the initial stages, accessibility to Coral Island was limited, but infrastructure developments have improved over the years. There has been significant investment in creating family-friendly spaces, including amusement parks, beaches, and various leisure facilities. Al Marjan Island now boasts a number of attractions, including a beautifully landscaped corniche, walkways, and picnic spots that have made it a local favorite for weekend getaways.

Latest Tourism Trends

The global trend towards sustainable tourism has impacted the development of Coral Island as well. With an increasing number of visitors concerned about ecological preservation, the amenities and activities on the island are adapted to be eco-friendlier.

Moreover, there has been a growing trend in adventure tourism, leading to a rise in the popularity of water sports and activities on the island. Entities have been established to offer experiences such as fishing trips, boat tours, and diving excursions – all while being mindful of the delicate marine environment.

Additionally, with the Kingdom opening up its doors to international tourists, there's a push for more high-quality accommodation options to cater to the upscale tourist segment. In response to this, luxury hotels and resorts are being planned, aiming to place Coral Island as a premier destination in Saudi Arabia's tourism landscape.

Looking to the Future

As part of the wider efforts to boost tourism in Saudi Arabia, Coral Island will continue to evolve. The mix of local culture, modern amenities, and natural beauty offers a unique proposition to travelers. With ongoing investment and development, the tourism history of Coral Island is still being written, and its future looks bright as it transforms into a vibrant and sustainable tourist hub in the heart of the Middle East.
