East-West/West-East Sculpture by Richard Serra - A Highlight of Al Shahaniya, Qatar

History of Tourism in Al Shahaniya, Qatar

Al Shahaniya, located in central Qatar, has a fairly nascent but rapidly growing tourism industry. With the rising prominence of Qatar as a luxury and culture destination, the region has seen a boost in visitor numbers. Historically, the area is known for its camel racing at Al Shahaniya Camel Racetrack, which has been a local attraction for years.

The most significant shift in tourism dynamics came with Qatar's increasing investment in cultural infrastructure. This led to the development of attractions like the East-West/West-East Sculpture by Richard Serra, commissioned by the Qatar Museums Authority, part of the nation's effort to transform itself into a global cultural hub ahead of events like the FIFA World Cup 2022.

East-West/West-East Sculpture by Richard Serra

In the midst of the Brouq nature reserve near Zekreet in western Qatar, four towering steel plates rise out of the desert, creating a stunning contrast against the timeless landscape. The East-West/West-East installation, created by the renowned American artist Richard Serra and unveiled in 2014, marks a significant point in Qatar's cultural landscape.

The installation spans over a kilometer, with each plate measuring around 14.5 meters in height. Serra's work harmonizes with the topography - the plates are level with each other, despite the undulations of the desert. This alignment of the plates symbolically bridges the gap between two geographical extremes, east and west, serving as a metaphor for the connections among different cultures.

The weathered steel material, known as COR-TEN, is designed to withstand the harsh desert environment, slowly changing its appearance over time as it oxidically ages. This dynamic interaction with the environment reflects the ever-changing nature of tourism and culture in the region.
