Fort George, located near Inverness in the United Kingdom, is an 18th-century fortress situated on an imposing promontory next to the Moray Firth. It was built after the Jacobite rising of 1745, designed by Lieutenant-General William Skinner and completed in 1769. The fort was intended to be an impregnable bastion of British power and is one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It is still in use as a military barracks, housing the Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland. Visitors to Fort George can explore its well-preserved defense structures, including the grand magazine designed to hold 2,500 barrels of gunpowder and a collection of arms in the historic barracks. There's also the Highlanders' Museum (Queen's Own Highlanders Collection), which is the largest regimental museum outside Edinburgh. The site offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and is a significant attraction for those interested in military history, architecture, and the scenic beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
