Inverness Castle is situated in the heart of Inverness, the largest city and the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands. Overlooking the River Ness, this red sandstone structure currently houses the Inverness Sheriff Court. The castle has gone through various rebuilds since the original fortification was built in the 11th century. The present castle, constructed in 1836, shows the neo-Norman style and was designed by architect William Burn. While the castle itself is not open to the public as it functions as a courthouse, the grounds and the viewpoint offer spectacular panoramas of the city and the surrounding landscape. Inverness Castle is a significant landmark that stands on a cliff overlooking the river, offering visitors insight into the city's rich history. Additionally, it is the starting point of the North Coast 500, a scenic route through the Highlands, and is near the Ness Islands, which are connected by Victorian footbridges offering serene walks.
