Ginkakuji, formally known as Jisho-ji, is a Zen temple located in Kyoto's Higashiyama district. While not directly associated with food, it is situated in Kyoto, a city with a rich culinary tradition. Kyoto's cuisine, known as Kyo-ryori, is distinguished by its refinement and use of seasonal local ingredients. This tradition stems from Kyoto's long history as Japan's imperial capital, where court cuisine (Yusoku-ryori) evolved into the elaborate kaiseki-ryori, a multicourse haute cuisine that showcases the Zen Buddhist influence and the art of hospitality (omotenashi).
Although Ginkakuji itself is not a food destination, its surrounding area offers an array of eateries where visitors can enjoy matcha-based sweets and local dishes after exploring the temple. Kyoto is also famous for its traditional vegetable dishes known as shojin-ryori, which are vegetarian and align with Buddhist dietary principles. Visitors to Ginkakuji can find such traditional food nearby, reflecting Kyoto's history as a center for Zen Buddhism.
