Gizilagaj State Reserve is a significant sanctuary for a diverse array of bird species located in the Lankaran region of Azerbaijan. Established in 1929, the reserve spreads across roughly 884 square kilometers and primarily aims to protect the wetland ecosystems and the migratory and local birds that inhabit them. The terrain is mostly flat, encompassing vast reed beds, freshwater lakes, and a section of the Caspian Sea shoreline. It is a part of the Gizilagaj Bay of the Caspian Sea. Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, making it a paradise for ornithologists and birdwatchers. Notably, the reserve provides a habitat for overwintering waterfowl and passerines. The site also supports the endangered Caspian seal and various species of fish. Apart from birdwatching, Gizilagaj State Reserve offers opportunities for environmental education and is an area of scientific research. The ecosystem's health is critical for the conservation of many species that depend on the region's unique environmental characteristics.
