Gori is a city in eastern Georgia, which serves as the regional capital of Shida Kartli. Nestled along the banks of the Mtkvari River and surrounded by the scenic Caucasus Mountains, it holds a significant place in Georgian history. Gori is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and the city features the Stalin Museum which includes his birth house preserved under a pavilion, personal belongings, and a private train car. The city's history stretches back to the early centuries, as evidenced by the ancient fortress of Goris Tsikhe that dominates the city's skyline, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the region's medieval past. Despite its association with Stalin, Gori is developing its identity, focusing on its cultural heritage, local cuisine, and warm hospitality. The city was affected during the Russo-Georgian War in 2008, but has since been on a path to recovery and growth. Gori is also a gateway to explore the surrounding historical sites, such as Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock-hewn town with a blend of pagan and Christian history.
