Kutaisi, Georgia's legislative capital and the third-largest city, is situated along the Rioni River in the country's western region. With a rich history that dates back to ancient times, Kutaisi was once the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and principalities. It is the site of the Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cathedral, founded in the early 11th century, is an iconic example of medieval architecture even though it was partly destroyed and later restored. The Gelati Monastery, founded by King David the Builder in 1106, served as a center for education and culture for many centuries. The city exudes a charming blend of old and modern, with bustling markets, quaint streets, and historical buildings. Kutaisi is also a gateway to the natural splendors of Georgia’s western region, including Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon, and the Sataplia Nature Reserve. With its vibrant atmosphere and deep cultural significance, Kutaisi represents the heart of Georgian heritage and continues to play a central role in the country's development.
