Best Time to Visit the Great Buddha of Kamakura

Visiting the Great Buddha of Kamakura, also known as Dai-Butsu, is a memorable experience throughout the year. However, the most recommended time to visit is during the spring months of March to May. This period is characterized by pleasant weather with average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F), providing a comfortable environment for outdoor activities. Spring also aligns with the cherry blossom season, allowing visitors to enjoy the splendid view of blooming sakura trees that wonderfully complement the serene presence of the giant bronze statue. The temple grounds are especially picturesque during this season, making it an ideal time for both sightseeing and photography. Additionally, Golden Week, a series of national holidays at the end of April and beginning of May, brings a festive mood to the region, though it can also lead to larger crowds.

Autumn, specifically from September to November, is another excellent period to visit the Great Buddha. During these months, the weather is comfortable with minimal rainfall, and the humidity of summer decreases. The foliage in the vicinity of Kamakura begins to turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, providing a breathtaking backdrop for the Great Buddha. While October and November are particularly stunning due to the autumn leaves, it is advisable to visit on weekdays if possible, as weekends draw larger crowds eager to witness the fall beauty. Both spring and autumn also offer a variety of cultural festivals and events in Kamakura that can enrich your visit to the Great Buddha.
