Visiting the Great Buddha of Kamakura, or Kotoku-in’s Daibutsu, is a memorable experience, and getting there is quite straightforward. The Great Buddha is located in the city of Kamakura, which is approximately an hour south of Tokyo by train.
The easiest and most common way to reach Kamakura is by train. From Tokyo, you can take the JR Yokosuka Line directly to Kamakura Station. The trip usually takes about 55 minutes. Another option is to take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station to Fujisawa Station and then transfer to the Enoshima Electric Railway which takes you to Kamakura.
Travelling by car is an option, though it is not recommended due to potential traffic and difficulty with parking. If you do choose to drive, use a reliable GPS and be prepared for toll roads.
The Great Buddha is approximately a 30-minute walk from Kamakura Station. Although it’s a bit of a walk, it’s a pleasant one through the historical city.
You can take a bus from Kamakura Station to the Daibutsu. The buses are frequent and take about 10-15 minutes. Look for buses number 33 or 35 bound for Daibutsu and get off at the Daibutsu-mae stop.
Rental bicycles are available near the station. This gives you a chance to explore Kamakura at your own pace while heading to see the Great Buddha.
