Halidzor Fortress Tourism

Halidzor Fortress is a historical landmark located near the town of Kapan, in the Syunik Province of Armenia. Perched on a rocky and steep hill, the fortress dates back to the 17th century and is a splendid example of ancient Armenian fortification architecture. It was initially built as a nunnery but later transformed into a fortress by the influential Armenian military leader, Davit Bek, during the 1720s to fight against Ottoman invasions. This fortress played a crucial role in the liberation of Syunik from foreign rule and has since been a symbol of resistance and Armenian pride. Halidzor Fortress offers a panoramic view of the Voghji River and the surrounding valleys, making it a popular spot for history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike. The walls of the fortress, although partly in ruins, still stand as a testament to its past glory. Visitors can explore the remnants of the barracks, chapel, and various defensive structures that speak of its strategic importance. The site is accessible by a hiking trail, which adds an adventurous element to the visit.
