Introduction to Hamhung City

Hamhung is North Korea's second-largest city, located on the country's east coast. It serves as the capital of South Hamgyong Province. Known for its historical significance and industrial presence, Hamhung features several cultural and historic sites, among which the Hamhung Central Square stands prominent.

History of Tourism in Hamhung

Unlike other more frequented North Korean destinations like Pyongyang, Hamhung has traditionally been less open to tourists due to its strategic industrial importance and military installations. However, in recent years, the North Korean government has taken small but significant steps to open the area for limited tourism as part of its wider effort to promote tourism as a means of economic development.

The history of tourism in Hamhung is relatively recent, with the city opening up to foreigners, primarily Chinese tourists and a few Western tour groups, in the 21st century. Visits are highly controlled and orchestrated by the state-run tourism agencies.

About Hamhung Central Square

The Central Square in Hamhung is notable for its large bronze statue of Kim Il Sung, reminiscent of many public squares in North Korea. It is a common venue for public gatherings, celebrations, and military parades. Due to the controlled nature of tourism in North Korea, it is not a destination that people can freely visit and is generally experienced as part of a guided tour.

Latest Trends in North Korea Tourism

Tourism in North Korea is subject to the political climate and government regulations. The latest trends suggest a cautious expansion of tourism within the country, with an emphasis on showcasing its achievements and cultural heritage. The country has been developing tourist zones and encouraging foreign investment in its tourism sector.

Experience-based tourism: Visitors to North Korea are often seeking a unique travel experience, something much different from traditional tourist destinations. As such, trips are carefully curated to provide a glimpse into the culture and society of this isolated nation.

Sightseeing: Guided tours to historic spots, war museums, and cultural sites remain the staple of tourism. Tourists typically visit well-known monuments and places of significant national pride.

Cultural exchange: There is also a focus on cultural exchanges, where tourists participate in local traditions, watch performances, and sometimes engage with the locals under supervision.

Isolation tourism: North Korea is often marketed as the "last frontier" of tourism, attracting those who wish to experience a country largely untouched by Western influence.

Conclusion

Despite its unique position in the world, North Korea is slowly inching toward a more open stance in terms of tourism, with places like Hamhung Central Square offering an insight into the country’s history and contemporary life, albeit within carefully structured and supervised conditions.
