Hazaribagh is a city and a municipality in the Hazaribagh district of the Indian state of Jharkhand. Renowned for its scenic beauty marked by dense tropical forests and a plethora of wildlife, the city gets its name from the thousands of gardens ('Hazar' meaning thousand; 'Bagh' meaning garden) it is said to have had in ancient times. Hazaribagh is situated on the Chotanagpur plateau, around 93 km from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. It is a popular health resort and is famous for the Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads over 184 square kilometers of plains, undulating landscape, steep hills, and dense tropical forests. The land, rich in minerals like mica and coal, also has a vibrant cultural heritage. The city is a hub of education in the region with numerous colleges and the Vinoba Bhave University.
