Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Hippodrome in Jerash is a remarkable historical site located within the ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Gerasa, in modern-day Jordan. Constructed around the 2nd century AD, this ancient sports field could once accommodate up to 15,000 spectators. One of the smallest but best-preserved Roman hippodromes, it was primarily used for chariot racing, one of the most popular sporting events of ancient times. The 245-meter-long structure is well defined by its elongated U-shape with a spina, the central barrier around which the chariots raced. Today, the Hippodrome is a significant tourist attraction, partially restored to showcase its historical grandeur. Visitors can witness reenactments of Roman legion drills and classical chariot races, providing a captivating glimpse into the entertainment of the past. The arched gateways, starting gates, and seating areas contribute to the understanding of its original function and the atmospheric setting within the larger archaeological context of Jerash, which is home to a wealth of ancient structures like colonnaded streets, temples, and theatres.
