Food History of Historic Al Mukalla Gate, Al Mukalla, Yemen

The coastal city of Al Mukalla, situated in the Hadramaut province of Yemen, is historically a bustling port rich in cultural exchange. Its culinary landscape has been shaped by various influences, including the Indian Ocean trade routes that brought spices, flavors, and dishes from across Asia and Africa. The Historic Al Mukalla Gate, a remnant of the city's past, serves as a threshold to a culinary tradition that marries local ingredients with foreign culinary techniques, resulting in a distinctive Hadhrami cuisine.

Seafood is a staple in Al Mukalla, thanks to its proximity to the Arabian Sea, and it is often prepared with a blend of spices reminiscent of the city’s historical trading connections. Rice and grains are central to the diet, and the absence of cow meat in traditional dishes has paved the way for creativity using lamb, goat, fish, and an array of vegetarian options.
