Accessing North Korea: As of my last update, North Korea is one of the most secluded countries in the world and independent travel to North Korea is not permitted. You must book a trip through an approved tour operator that includes a visa, guide, and an official itinerary. Make sure you are up to date with your country's travel advisories and regulations regarding travel to North Korea.
Reaching Hamhung: Travel within North Korea is highly restricted, and as such, all travel must be organized as part of the tour. Typically, the journey to Hamhung starts from Pyongyang, the capital city.
Pyongyang to Hamhung: Options to reach Hamhung from Pyongyang may include train or vehicle transport. Both means are subject to availability and must be arranged by your tour operator. The train journey offers a unique way to view the countryside but can take much longer than traveling by road.
Getting to Hungnam Shipyard: Once in Hamhung, movement is strictly controlled. Your tour group will be escorted to all destinations including the Hungnam Shipyard by local guides. Expect to travel by bus organized by your tour company.
Visiting the Shipyard: Schedules and itineraries in North Korea can change suddenly due to the local authorities’ decisions. If a visit to the Hungnam Shipyard is critical, ensure your tour operator is aware and can make the necessary arrangements. However, there are no guarantees.
Note: All visitors should follow the country's laws and regulations, and be aware that photography and filming are highly regulated, especially in sensitive areas like a shipyard. Ensure you follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
