Iskanderkul Lake is a stunning alpine lake located in the Sughd Province of Tajikistan, named after Alexander the Great ('Iskander' in Persian). Situated in the Fann Mountains, part of the Pamir-Alay mountain range, it's approximately 140 kilometers from the country's capital, Dushanbe, near the town of Panjakent. At an altitude of about 2,195 meters above sea level, it's often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the former Soviet Union. Fed by glaciers, the lake spans an area of 3.4 square kilometers with depths reaching up to 72 meters. Its turquoise waters are a spectacular sight, often credited to the high mineral content. The lake is part of the Iskanderkul Nature Reserve, a habitat for wild boar, wolves, bears, and various bird species, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird watching, and exploring nearby attractions such as the Snake Lake and the Iskander Darya river waterfalls, enhancing the area's natural allure.
